Complexity Generators
A Complexity Generator repeatedly creates work for other people while reporting their own work as complete.
The output may be a document, a process, a specification or a working prototype. It looks like progress because something now exists. Its producer has a visible deliverable. Everyone downstream inherits the task of deciding what it means, where it fits and who will keep it working.
AI amplifies this trait. As implementation becomes commoditized, producing artifacts takes less effort. Their interpretation, integration and maintenance still consume organizational capacity. A person can now generate obligations much faster than an organization can absorb them.
The shallow expert now has a tool that can generate documentation, code and process almost without limit. Each addition arrives with a plausible explanation, reinforcing the impression that its creator understands the system. The ability to generate a process becomes confused with the judgment required to improve one. More structure accumulates without making the work simpler.
Twelve hours with a coding agent can produce an impressive solution to a problem nobody has. Getting it to run feels like validation. The receiving team must then spend time evaluating it, establishing why it has no practical use and explaining that back to its creator. The organization pays for the output even when it discards it.
“Have your agent read it” changes how the material is consumed. Someone still has to resolve contradictions, reconcile it with the existing system and own the consequences. A summary cannot accept responsibility.
The cost can compound. Each addition must coexist with earlier decisions, interfaces and commitments. Another prototype can create another integration project. Another specification can create another meeting. Output accelerates while the organization accumulates unfinished obligations.
The Complexity Generator introduces complexity and leaves simplification to somebody else. Throwing work over the wall is how they declare completion: the unresolved decisions, integration and consequences become the receiving team’s problem. Their productivity depends on counting the artifact while excluding the work it creates.
Complexity Generators can work extraordinarily hard and produce negative value. The organizational failure is mistaking their output for progress.
