Superposition III: Before the Prompt
The influence of AI may begin before the conversation does. Repeated interaction teaches which formulations elicit useful responses. Context, explicit objectives, and decomposable tasks become familiar ways to make a request intelligible. The further possibility is that these conventions begin selecting which thoughts are permitted to become requests at all.
This is a hypothesis about anticipatory accommodation, not an established consequence of Kahneman’s framework. An intended listener can enter the composition of a thought. A difficult intuition is translated into the kind of question expected to receive a productive answer; eventually the translation may precede awareness of the intuition. The model need not choose the objective if its anticipated response helps determine what qualifies as an objective.
Successful prompting can also teach ritual. A formulation works, its structure is repeated, and contingent details acquire the status of necessities. Intermittent success complicates the diagnosis: did the instruction improve the result, or did a variable system happen to produce a better answer? Without subtraction or comparison, proficiency can become a repertoire of superstitions. The slot machine teaches a technique for pulling the handle, then the technique becomes an account of how the machine works.
Physical disconnection is insufficient if that account remains the medium of thought. A walk can remain an exercise in composing prompts. Conversely, using AI need not surrender conceptual independence if its formulations remain available for rejection. The distinction concerns whether an abstraction can survive long enough to be evaluated without first demonstrating compatibility with the tool.
Cycles of intensive research and unstructured reflection could make that distinction easier to maintain. Research supplies material; an interval without immediate elaboration leaves room for relationships the initial question did not anticipate. This is a proposed discipline to test, not a guaranteed recipe for originality. Its criterion is whether a different question becomes possible, including one that makes the original request unnecessary. Better prompting alone cannot establish that the right problem was selected.
